A journey through history
The origins of Malcesine date back to 500 BC, when Etruscan and other sedentary populations settled in the area. With Roman expansion in 15 BC, the village became part of the Empire, evolving as an important defensive and commercial center.
Malcesine Castle was originally built by the Lombards in the first millennium and rebuilt by the Franks in 509 AD, after they defeated the Lombards. However, it was the Scaligeri who transformed it into what we know today: an imposing structure overlooking the lake and the surrounding mountains.
The Scaliger era and the Gardesana dell'Acqua
In 1277, Alberto della Scala included Malcesine Castle among the fortresses under the direct control of Verona. Under the Scaliger rule, the village acquired a strategic and administrative role. The birth of the Gardesana dell'Acqua , a federation of ten municipalities on Lake Garda, marked a period of relative autonomy and prosperity. Malcesine became the seat of the Captain of the Lake, an authority with defense and police duties.
Among the most epic episodes in the history of Garda is the battle between Venice and Milan, which saw the transport of Venetian galleys from the Adige to Lake Garda, an extraordinary feat for the time.
Between Venice, Austria and Napoleon
The history of Malcesine has been deeply influenced by the great powers of the time. From the dominion of the Scaligeri, the village passed to the Visconti of Milan in 1387, and then became part of the Republic of Venice in 1405. During the Napoleonic wars, Malcesine saw alternating Austrian and French control, until it became part of the Kingdom of Italy in 1866.
